New waters for us ...

We are currently visiting friends who just happen to live near a canal ... and a river ... ones that we've never cruised ...
Behind the lock gates is of course the River Trent

... Torksey Lock is on the Fossdyke Canal

George checking out the gate mechanism with Ian and Jess

The Fossdyke claims to be the oldest man-made waterway ...
built by the Romans in c.120AD ...
was dredged in 1121 ...
a large maintenance programme took place on the canal in 1620 ...
and has been used for pleasure since the 19th century.

We are really looking forward to the next few days rediscovering Lincoln. It is just a few months off 50 years since we were here last when George was still in the Royal Air Force and both of our children were born in Lincoln.

Of course I can't resist putting here an update on our beautiful twin great-granddaughters ...

Grace (left) and Lillian are now 16 weeks old and weigh in at a very respectable 10lbs each and are now smiling!

The Trent sounds like a lovely river, Carole. I've often read about people's cruises on it, but I believe it can also be quite lively! I hope you'll blog about Lincoln. I was at college there and have very fond memories of the city, but that was a very long time ago! Forty years to be precise!

You're absolutely right about the River Trent and its liveliness Val which is the main reason we've never cruised it. It is just a few months less than 53 years since we moved to Lincoln and were there for about 2 years. Hope you enjoy the next post.

I remember you being in a terraced house in Lincoln, with a bay window? Think you were preggers with Sharon.

Thanks for your comment Margaret. Lincoln and the surrounding area is well worth a visit.
