Archimedes ...

Sunday (12th) we were invited for a roast aboard No Problem, lovely as always.  Later when we were back on Still Rockin' the rain came.  It was very heavy for about 45 minutes and then there was a clap of thunder a flash of lightening and the rain stopped in an instant!  Another roll of thunder immediately overhead and that was it ... finished!   We'd been watching a dvd with the sound turned to max but still couldn't hear it so when the rain etc stopped we were blasted by the film!

Monday (13th August) we unhitch from No Problem XL and pulled back ...
while Sue pulled out ... apparently Sue needs Vic wants to walk into Sutton Courtenay but it's a bit too far from here, so they're moving to a mooring a little closer.  We've arranged to meet them at the pub later.  Sue successfully made a few enquiries and found a pub that's open today but had no food; no problem we'll eat before we leave.
We saw this roof being re-thatched last year

... love the hares on the ridge

At the George and Dragon ...

Sue and Rudolph Vic were waiting (sorry, couldn't resist Vic) with the K9's

Later we all walked down to the river to see if Sutton Courtenay's Archimedes Screw was in operation

Helena Bonham Carter the great grand daughter of Prime Minister Asquith lives here.  I wrote a little bit about this in a blog post last year when we visited click here to read more.

The river is not high enough for the three screws to be in operation

When they are working they can produce enough energy to power about 500 properties

After the dogs had let off steam to cool down below the screws and drying of a bit on the recently cut hay meadow ...
it was time to take our leave of Sue and Vic ...
and we retraced our steps along the Thames path ...

Historic work boat Chiswick is for sale if there's anyone out there looking for a project

When I saw this I thought of Sharon and Richard who sold their narrowboat Oakapple some time ago and are now rediscovering their earlier years involving their love of scooters.

All Saints Church was open last time we visited Sutton Courtenay
...
click here for a look inside.

I have to admit that we were both a bit cream crackered after that long walk (about 5.5 miles) and a few zzzzz were required when we arrived back home but it had been yet another ... great day!

PS:  for Lisa and Sue regarding the renovation/reinstallation of the Wilts and Berks Canal near Culham Lock ...

When I was looking back at previous visits to Sutton Courtenay I found the post when George and I met the local farmer whilst out walking ... click on this link to read the conversation we had with him.  Very interesting in light of our recent conversations.
